Fishers Hires Barnes and Thornburg as Lobbyists

The Town of Fishers has hired the attorney firm of Barnes and Thornburg to stop the State Senate bill proposals that could make forced annexation in this state more fair to its citizens. While lobbyists are not uncommon, one must wonder if the citizens of Fishers expect their tax dollars to be used in this way. This is an example of the kind of free, unchecked spending that happens with a municaplity’s tax dollars. Is it any wonder why the citizens of Geist (and other unincorporated areas) have NO desire to be a part of a city or town that can so easily get away with wasted spending??? The same people who whine that life’s not fair because non-citizens use their roads are all too happy to waste their citizen’s money in ways seen and unseen. Fishers only regret must be that Jack Abramoff wasn’t able to help them out with their efforts.

I’m sure Abramoff could use the money if you want to hire him yourself.

You guys should just incorporate your own town and get it over with.

The involuntary annexations being pushed, are by the incumbent Fishers Town Council, NOT by all the residents of Fishers. Many Fishers residents, myself included, view the Council’s “reasons” for annexation to be anywhere from silly to nonsense. The recent approval of the fire service contract between Fishers and Fall Creek Township is a case in point. The unincorporated areas of the township, including Geist, will be paying Fishers over $2 Million for fire service in 2007. Clearly that is adequate, and destroys one of the Council’s own arguments for annexation. No wonder they did not entertain any public comment when they approved the contract at the April 16, 2007 meeting at which I was present.

I oppose involuntary annexation, unless a case can be made of such great public necessity that would over-ride the wishes of residents. That is not the case with Geist. The Town Council needs to quit wasting taxpayer money on this issue.
